Late-night Amsterdam massage: writing a late hour so nobody reads it as a morning one
A late hour is the hour most often written wrong. Eleven can be morning or night. Half eleven means two different times in two different countries. This page helps you write a late hour clearly and get the room ready for a quiet arrival.
Eleven, eleven at night, or 23:00
On a twelve hour clock, eleven needs a word after it to be clear, and many visitors forget that word. On the twenty-four hour clock, 23:00 can only mean one moment, late in the evening. Use it in every message. If your phone shows times with am and pm, take any hour after midday and add twelve: eleven at night becomes 23:00. The short story Half ten means two different hours shows how one small phrase can move a booking by a whole hour.
The same rate after dark
A late hour does not cost more. The rate on each profile is the same at 14:00 and at 02:00. Nothing is charged for her travel inside Amsterdam either. So the only thing that changes at night is the street outside your window. The total in the reply stays the figure for the length you chose.
A hotel at night
Late in the evening a hotel becomes quieter. The front desk may have one person on duty, and the lobby may be nearly empty. Some hotels close the main door after a certain hour and use a side door or a bell. If yours does, say so in one line: main door closed at night, side door with a bell. Some lifts need a key card after dark. In that case she messages you from the lobby, and you come down to meet her.
A flat at night
In a rented flat the street may be dark, and house numbers are hard to read in the dark. Switch on a light by the window or near the door if you can. Tell her which bell to press, using the marks explained in the guide to Amsterdam addresses. If the street door is locked, write the words I will come down. Walk softly on the stairs, because neighbours are asleep, and old stairs carry every sound.
The window does not change at night
For a booking made for as soon as possible, the window in central Amsterdam stays forty to sixty minutes, late or early. When the hour was agreed in advance, the agreed hour is the start. Either way she sends one line when she sets out and another when she is at your floor. Keep the phone near you, with the sound on.
